Swimming Lessons
Each week, KAL instructors hold over 400 swimming lessons for children and adults on the Kirklees Shark Learn to Swim scheme. All our instructors are fully qualified and CRB checked and many, like Philip Morrison pictured below, have taught for many years.
Enrolment
- This takes place at the pool where lessons are to be taken, prior to the commencement of the course. Dates are displayed around sites and also at the end of this page.
- Payment can be made by cash, cheques (made payable to Kirklees Active Leisure) or debit or credit card.
- Telephone booking can only be made once customers who have attended site in person have been allocated places.
Booking Procedure
Anyone new to the scheme is asked to book at public enrolment sessions at the pools. Places are limited and are offered on a first come, first served basis. For enrolment dates, please see below.
Once enrolled on a course of lessons you are guaranteed a place in the appropriate grade, although no guarantee can be given about day, time or teacher as demand varies for each course.
Courses are typically run over 12 weeks, though this can vary if the programme is disrupted due to closures for maintenance or bank holidays.
Course timetables will be displayed at sites.
One to One Lessons
Our professional instructors will improve swimming skills, ability and confidence, through instruction on an individual basis. Contact site for availability. Sessions cost £19.15 each.
Junior Lessons
Ducklings 0 to 3 years
An adult and child participation class where the child will gain a degree of confidence, competence, and independence. The course introduces skills to encourage balance and familiarity of water through fun and games.
Water Confidence 3 to 6 years
These adult and child courses are aimed at children aged 3 to 6 years old. The teacher instructs the adult how to physically guide the child through various strokes, encouraging progression on the stroke the child does best through fun acti
vities.
These classes require a parent/guardian in the water with the child on a one to one basis.
Grades (6 years +)
Swimming lessons are based around a particular grade which offers the individual child the opportunity to progress under the direction of the teacher.
Towards the end of a course the teacher will decide if a swimmer is capable of moving onto the next grade or if they would benefit by repeating a particular course of lessons.
All grades are completed on a continuous assessment basis, there is no final test week. It is important that the pupil is on time for the start of the lesson and attends each week and also practices between lessons in order for them to have the best possible chance of progression.
