Swimming Development
Aims
- Increase the awareness and profile of swimming throughout the region; and
- Provide opportunities for swimmers to develop their skills further through participation.
- Develop and sustain a strong teacher and coach education programme and increase the number of active teachers and coaches in Kirklees.
- Kirklees Active Leisure’s Aquatics Manager Jane Donarski is responsible for working with the Amateur Swimming Association, Kirklees Council swimming development unit, leisure centres, schools, clubs, community groups and other authority swimming development officers and assistant development officers.
- K.A.L currently has one full time assistant swimming development officer, Katy Butterfield.
Why Swimming?
- Swimming is one of the most popular sports in the UK for all ages.
- It provides opportunities for learning, fun, relaxation, competition, fitness.
- Swimming also provides access to all sorts of other water-based activities.
- Most important of all, the ability to swim can save lives.
How?
- There are a wide range of activities within all of Kirklees Active Leisure Pools giving opportunities for all local residents to be involved in swimming in some shape or form.
- Our leisure centres run the Kirklees “learn to swim programme” with over four thousand swims per week. The programme was tailored to Kirklees Active Leisure’s needs and continues to be developed.
- Kirklees Active Leisure has a place on the West Yorkshire Partnership Liaison Group for swimming, which works together sharing best practice.
- Support is also given to all schools that swim each week in our leisure centres. K.A.L works closely with Kirklees education swimming department and work continues on raising the National Curriculum pass rates in schools at key stage 2.
- Local swim clubs are supported through visits, coach education courses. Support is also provided to local clubs with the swim 21 accreditation.
