Town goalie launched new strength area

Alex Smithies, Huddersfield Town's goalie, cut a ribbon to officially open the new Pure Strength Area at Colne Valley Leisure Centre.

The keeper, who is a regular at the centre, demonstrated some of the new free weights which include a half rack, flat bench, preacher bench and new range of heavier dumbells. He is pictured at the opening below with (from left) fitness manager Kelly Gray and personal trainer Louise Barbuti.

“Many people think that doing cardio sessions on a weekly basis is the best way to keep fit – and that weights are largely for men.

“But we want our new area to appeal to everyone. Anyone who does exercises with weights can benefit from it in so many ways. When you do resistance training and build up your muscles, you increase your metabolism, naturally burn more calories daily, and improve your bone density.

“After doing resistance exercises, you continue to burn calories, unlike aerobic activity. Doing a combination of both is the best way to stay fit, healthy and toned.”

Alongside the Pure Strength Area, the centre also launched its exciting new Boot Camp area and classes.

To make the tough 90-minute classes even more robust, they have prepared an outdoor area at the side of the swimming pool building like an adult playground. It contains adult climbing frame with monkey bars, high and low hurdles and balance beams.

Kelly added: “We are running free taster sessions on Tuesday September 13th and Wednesday September 14th.  Anyone who stays the distance will get a voucher for future sessions worth £20.

“Our Boot Camp area will be used in all weathers and gets nice and muddy after the rain. But that is the whole point of the boot camp, to get a challenging, all-weather experience with a personal trainer.”

Boot Camp participants are advised to wear outdoor trainers and, depending on the weather, take a light waterproof with them.

Free taster sessions lasting 90 minutes will run on Tuesday 13th and Wednesday 14th at 7.30am, 9.30am, 6pm and 7.30pm.

The centre also launched its new personal training programme, with three trainers now available to help people get fitter, reach their goals or just train effectively. Sessions last between 30 minutes and an hour.

Free half hour taster sessions will be running from Monday to Thursday this week. Contact the centre to book your places for any of the taster sessions on 01484 222522.
